For those of us who don t live in a tropical environment, come the cold weather months, many of us stick out head in the sand when it comes to fitness and proper diet. If we did happen to live in the tropics and was in the habit of hitting the beach every week it wouldn t be so hard to stay motivated to keep fit. Whether it is looking good during the summer months, for that winter holiday getaway, or just looking good naked in front of someone special, we all desire to be fit some time. Find a way to remind yourself of this fact during those cold winter months where you re bundled up in layers of clothing and you will find the motivation to stick to your fitness routine and diet plan.
Part of the problem with the winter is that many of the activities we may do in the summer to stay fit are taken away from us. If you run or go for regular walks to burn some excess calories, it is very challenging to keep that up in some of the cooler climates. What about turning to winter activities; skiing, skating, hockey, and snowshoeing are just a few. Don t have a lot of money? Pick up a cheaper pair of second-hand gear from a second-hand sports store. Some public rinks have skate rentals which is even cheaper.
Don t like the thought of any exercise outside? What about going swimming at the local swimming pool? If you run during the warmer months, this option will give your joints a rest from the pounding pavement. Besides, it is always smart to switch up your routine to avoid boredom.
Or take your exercise inside. You don t have to join a gym although that is a good idea too. You can do body weight exercises at home to keep your whole body lean and strong. Just remember to train all the major muscle groups in your body; legs, back, chest, shoulders, arms, abs, and calves. A simple home fitness exercise program would look like this:
Do three rounds of the following exercises. Do each exercise one after the other without rest. At the end of one round take a 2 minute break and repeat until all the rounds are done.
Push ups x 10Lunges x 10 (each leg)Hindu Push ups x 10Jumping Jacks x 20Crunches x 20
This will take less than 20 minutes but I can guarantee you it will keep you fit. Perform this routine Monday to Friday and give yourself the weekends to chill.
The other component of staying fit is continuing to eat a healthy diet year round. That doesn t mean you can t indulge, just keep it to no more than 3 cheat meals a week. Eat clean the rest of the time. Avoid the sweets and fatty foods if it s not a cheat meal. Take fruit, nuts, and veggies for snacks. And drink 2 to 3 litres of water every day.
You can see that if you use your imagination, it s not too difficult to find some activity to do in the winter months. And if you just put in a little effort with fitness and diet, you won t be stressed come beach season only just around the bend. In fact, you may look better next year than you did this year with an effective fitness routine. That prospect is pretty enticing!
